Shop Chock Full O' Nuts Coffee

Chock Full o' Nuts is a beloved coffee brand originally named after a nut shop that eventually stopped selling nuts. Despite the name, there are absolutely no nuts in the coffee! You can find it at ACME Markets in either ground coffee or K-Cup pods sections.

Which roast should you get?

What customers are saying

One dedicated reviewer of the 26 oz Original has been a fan since long before the brand made its way to the West Coast:

"It is good to see that chock full of nuts coffee is now out west. I have been drinking that for many years in New York City. Also when I was young I used to visit the chock full of nuts Cafe and fountain stores."

Flavor is the most common topic in reviews. "Chock full o' Nuts is really delicious. Never bitter or acidic," one customer wrote. Another shared: "Has a very smooth taste & feels like it wants you to have another cup of coffee so I do."

The sole review for Morning Treat Donut Shop comes from a long-time buyer who noted, "It a blended Columbian and Arabica, medium roast. Doesn't taste burned like the dark roast."

Some customers like to get creative—one reviewer mixes the Original roast with espresso for an extra kick. As for the Colombian K-Cups, the single review says it all: "It quickly disappeared when I went back the next day."

How to make cold brew with ground coffee

cold brew coffee

Cold brew is an excellent, low-acid way to enjoy coffee. Because cold water extracts less acid from the grounds than hot water, the result is much smoother than traditional iced coffee (which is brewed hot and poured over ice). Plus, you don't even need a machine!

Which coffee should you use? Any roast will work, so it's best to start with one you already enjoy hot. Both Heavenly Original and 100% Colombian are solid medium roasts, while New York Roast offers a darker, bolder profile.

When making cold brew, the grind size actually matters more than the roast. Typically, cold brew calls for a coarse grind. Since these cans contain an all-purpose (finer) grind, it'll still work perfectly fine—you'll just need to filter the coffee twice.

Keep in mind that cold brew requires significantly more coffee grounds than a standard pot of drip coffee. If you plan to make it frequently, buying the larger cans is definitely the way to go.

How to make it:

  1. Put one cup of coffee grounds into a large jar and pour four cups of cold water over them.
  2. Stir well to ensure all the grounds are fully saturated.
  3. Cover the jar and let it steep in the fridge for 12 to 24 hours.
  4. Strain the mixture through a fine mesh strainer, and then run it through a paper coffee filter to catch any remaining silt.
  5. Serve over ice! Since what you've just made is essentially a cold brew concentrate, you'll want to dilute it with water or milk to match your taste preferences.
  6. Store any leftovers in the fridge and enjoy within a few days.

Cold brew vs. iced coffee: Just remember, cold brew never touches hot water. Iced coffee is brewed hot and then poured over ice. If you decide to make iced coffee instead, be sure to brew it at double strength, as the melting ice will quickly dilute it.

The story behind the name

photo of times square

The brand's founder, William Black, originally sold shelled nuts to theatergoers in Times Square and eventually opened a shop at Broadway and 43rd Street. When the Great Depression hit, New Yorkers could no longer afford luxury nuts, so he pivoted. He converted his shops into lunch counters, selling a cup of coffee and a sandwich for just a nickel. The original name, however, stuck around. You'll notice the cans proudly state "Premium Coffee Since 1932," though it wasn't until 1953 that the coffee made its way into supermarkets.

Interestingly, baseball legend Jackie Robinson served as the company's vice president and director of personnel after retiring from the sport.

The word "Heavenly" featured on the Original and Decaf cans comes from a classic advertising jingle. It ran on radio and television throughout the 1950s and 60s, sung by Black's wife, cabaret singer Page Morton Black. The original lyric claimed it was "better coffee Rockefeller's money can't buy," but after New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller sued, they tweaked it to "a millionaire's money." You can also spot the iconic New York skyline printed on every can, paying homage to the brand's roots, and one of their K-Cup varieties is aptly named Midtown Manhattan.

Note: If you are managing a severe nut allergy, always read the ingredients and allergen warnings on the package you're buying. If you have any doubts, reach out to the manufacturer directly.

Finding it at ACME Markets

You can easily shop for Chock Full o' Nuts on acmemarkets.com for delivery or Drive Up & Go pickup. If you're shopping in-store, just check the coffee aisle alongside the other canned ground coffees.

Every can features a handy scale on the front indicating whether it's a mild, medium, or dark roast, with the specific roast boxed in white. This makes it super easy to grab the right one without having to memorize the product names!

Sizes and freshness

The Original roast comes in an 11.3 oz can and a 26 oz can, while the New York Roast is available in 10.5 oz and 23 oz sizes. Colombian, Donut Shop, and Decaf are offered in a single size.

Coffee naturally loses its aroma when exposed to air, so try to buy a size you can finish reasonably quickly. The National Coffee Association recommends storing coffee in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. Fortunately, the classic steel cans do a great job of this—just make sure you press the lid on tightly after each use!
